An Enchanting Escape on the California Coast
When I discovered Carmel-by-the-Sea on the map, my first thought was: ‘Wow, I absolutely have to go there!’ It was one of those places that struck me so much that I decided to sacrifice other stops on my itinerary to include it. And I can say with certainty that it was a winning choice. This village, located just south of Monterey, is a true gem, a mix of charm and authenticity that is not easily found elsewhere. Its cobblestone streets and fairy-tale houses seem straight out of a storybook, reminiscent of Alsatian villages like Colmar, but with the added touch of white sand.
If I had had more time, I would have stayed an entire day to fully immerse myself in its magic. However, I could only make a brief stop between Los Angeles and San Francisco, but even just for a few hours, Carmel-by-the-Sea managed to capture me with its unique atmosphere.
Carmel-by-the-Sea, often shortened to Carmel, has long been a magnet for artists, writers, and creatives seeking inspiration from its enchanting surroundings. The city’s artistic heritage is evident in the many art galleries, studios, and performing arts venues. One of its most famous residents was Clint Eastwood, who even became its mayor in the 1980s.
Carmel’s natural beauty is equally captivating. The town boasts pristine sandy beaches, including the scenic Carmel Beach with its iconic cypress trees and breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. Visitors can stroll along the white sands, watch surfers ride the waves, or simply relax and enjoy the peaceful vibe.

The Unique Style of Carmel
Carmel-by-the-Sea is renowned for its distinctive architectural style, characterized by charming cottages adorned with fairytale-like details such as sloping roofs, wooden shingles, and meticulously maintained gardens. The town enforces strict building codes to preserve its picturesque atmosphere, banning street addresses and mailboxes in favor of quirky house names.
One of Carmel’s most iconic landmarks is the Tor House, a fairytale-like structure built by poet Robinson Jeffers. This stone tower and cottage, surrounded by lush gardens with ocean views, offer a glimpse into the literary and artistic heritage of the area.

Culinary and Cultural Delights
When it comes to dining, Carmel offers a variety of culinary experiences ranging from gourmet restaurants to quaint bistros and seafood eateries. Local specialties include fresh seafood, artisanal cheeses, and wines from the nearby Carmel Valley vineyards. If you’re a cheese lover, you can’t miss The Cheese Shop, where you’ll find an incredible selection of artisanal cheeses and gourmet products. Their motto is ‘Eat Cheese, Drink Wine, Live Life Happy!’—because, as they say, the secret to a happy life is simple: cheese, wine, and plenty of smiles!
Activities and Excursions
In addition to its cultural and natural attractions, Carmel-by-the-Sea offers a range of activities for outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors can explore the nearby Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, known for its dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, and diverse marine life. Hiking trails wind through cypress and pine forests, offering breathtaking views of the rugged coastline.
