An Enchanting Escape on the California Coast
When I first spotted Carmel-by-the-Sea on the map, I knew I had to go. I even skipped other stops to include it—and it was absolutely worth it. Just south of Monterey, this charming village feels like a fairytale, with cobblestone streets and storybook houses reminiscent of Alsatian towns like Colmar, but set against stunning white-sand beaches.

I only had a short stop between Los Angeles and San Francisco, yet even a few hours were enough to fall in love with its unique atmosphere. Long known as a haven for artists and creatives, Carmel is filled with galleries and cultural spaces—and was once even home to Clint Eastwood, who served as mayor in the 1980s.
Its natural beauty is just as magical, especially Carmel Beach, where cypress trees frame breathtaking views of the Pacific. Whether strolling along the sand or simply soaking in the peaceful vibe, Carmel-by-the-Sea truly leaves a lasting impression.

The Unique Style of Carmel
Carmel-by-the-Sea is renowned for its distinctive architectural style, characterized by charming cottages adorned with fairytale-like details such as sloping roofs, wooden shingles, and meticulously maintained gardens. The town enforces strict building codes to preserve its picturesque atmosphere, banning street addresses and mailboxes in favor of quirky house names.
One of Carmel’s most iconic landmarks is the Tor House, a fairytale-like structure built by poet Robinson Jeffers. This stone tower and cottage, surrounded by lush gardens with ocean views, offer a glimpse into the literary and artistic heritage of the area.
