Val di Mello and Forest of Bagni

If you’re looking for a different weekend immersed in the fresh, unspoiled nature of Lombardy, Valtellina is the place for you. Located near Sondrio, this stunning valley offers breathtaking landscapes, wonderful hiking trails, and plenty of relaxation. Here’s a perfect itinerary for a summer weekend.

Day 1 Morning: Hike in Val di Mello

Start your adventure in the village of San Martino, where you can park your car. There’s a parking lot in the village square that costs 1 euro per hour and is about a 10-15 minute walk from the trailhead. Alternatively, there’s another parking area just meters from the trail’s start, accessible with a 12-euro pass, which can be purchased at the info point in the San Martino square. This is definitely the recommended option if you have children.

From here, the trail leads you through the beautiful Val di Mello. The first point of interest is the Laghetto del Qualido, a hidden gem among the mountains. Continuing along, you will reach the famous Bidet della Contessa, a pond with crystal-clear waters, perfect for a refreshing break. You’ll also recognize it by the large rock where people climb to dive in. Along the route, you’ll find several shelters, ideal for a coffee break and enjoying the surrounding scenery of streams flowing through lush meadows. The walk is easy, and the landscapes are postcard-perfect.

Afternoon: Lunch and Relax in the Forest of Bagni di Masino

After a morning of trekking, it’s time to savor traditional Valtellina cuisine at one of the local shelters, such as Rifugio Luna Nascente, Rifugio Mello, Trattoria del Gatto Rosso, or Agriturismo Al Camer. Dishes like pizzoccheri, sciatt, and bresaola will give you the energy needed for the afternoon.

Alternatively, you can return to the village and have lunch at a nearby restaurant.

After lunch, head to the Forest of Bagni di Masino for a more relaxing hike. This trail is very easy, with breathtaking scenery in every direction, making you feel like you’ve stepped into a fairy tale. You’ll encounter spectacular waterfalls and wide meadows, perfect for a picnic or a barbecue.

The nearest parking is at the Old Baths of Masino, the old disused thermal baths, located in Brembana a few minutes from San Martino. This parking area is private and costs 8 euros per day.

Tips for Families with Children

If you’re traveling with children, Val di Mello and the Forest of Bagni di Masino are perfect for them. The trails are easy to navigate and full of natural surprises that will captivate the little ones. Don’t forget to bring swimwear: the ponds and streams offer opportunities for cooling off and having fun in the water. Additionally, the picnic and barbecue areas in the Forest of Bagni di Masino are ideal for a family day out.

Camping Areas

If you want to extend your stay and immerse yourself fully in nature, there are several camping areas available. Bring your tent and spend the night under a starry sky, listening to the sounds of nature.

Day 2 Tibetan Bridge “Ponte nel Cielo”

The second day starts with one of the most exciting experiences in Valtellina: the Tibetan Bridge “Ponte nel Cielo.” Located in the village of Tartano, this bridge is the highest in Europe and offers spectacular views of the valley below. I recommend arriving early in the morning when it opens to avoid the crowds and enjoy the crossing in peace. Walking the bridge alone or with just a few people around is a unique experience that will make you feel truly connected with nature, and especially suspended in the air! The bridge is open every day of the year from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM, and on Saturdays until sunset (see here ). The ticket price is 8 euros per person, free for children up to 14 years old.

If you want to continue your day in nature, there are several trails to explore: Sentiero la Via del Sole, Sentiero Alpe Piazzo, and Sentiero del Pèk.

A weekend in Valtellina will offer you unforgettable experiences, from the enchanting landscapes and moments of pure relaxation to the adventure on the Ponte nel Cielo and conviviality in the Forest of Bagni di Masino. Prepare to discover a corner of Lombardy that will captivate you with its beauty and summer freshness. Enjoy your trip!
